What better way to celebrate Farm to School month than by sampling homemade applesauce?
Third and fifth graders at Liberty Elementary sampled applesauce today with their lunch. The apples came from Storybook Orchard in Story City, Iowa. The recipe had no added sugar, just apples, water, and cinnamon.
The samples were prepared by ISU Extension and Food Corps with the help of some master gardeners. Eighty pounds of apples were cooked in roasters, blended smooth, and brought to Liberty to share. The recipe was simple: 6 apples plus ½ cup of water and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon cooked in a crockpot on high for 3-4 hours, then mash and enjoy!
Several fifth graders, including Michael Hannam, Hailey Cook, and Shaylin Nicholson, noticed the cinnamon flavor. “It’s good,” said Hannam.
The applesauce was warm, noted Maryianeila Ramirez.
“I’ve had four” samples, noted Cole Hagen while Olley Arelong, sitting next to him, had eaten two.
Students learned more about eating locally-sourced produce after returning to class.
