Ottumwa Community Schools has put a plan in place to find a replacement for School Board Member, Alex Barr, who resigned his seat on the board Monday, February 19.
The board intends to appoint a replacement for Barr. The district will publish a notice of intent to appoint this week. Voters may file a petition requiring the vacancy be filled by special election. Petitions must be received within 14 days after publication of the notice (March 8).
Superintendent Nicole Kooiker plans to discuss the appointment of a new school board member at the district’s next school board meeting on February 26. The district will accept letters of interest from individuals wishing to fill the position until Friday, March 9 at 4 p.m. Interested candidates must be a resident of the Ottumwa Community School District, 18-years-old, and eligible to vote. Kooiker will schedule a special board meeting on Monday, March 19 to hear responses from candidates interested in filling the position. The board will then rank order the candidates based on their responses to questions and announce the person who receives the highest score. This person will serve until the next school election in November 2019.
The process must be completed within 30 days of the resignation.
