Students Celebrate Their School's Diversity

On March 7,the Diversity Committee, a group of Ottumwa High School students, presented a Diversity Assembly to the student body. They have been preparing and rehearsing this event for weeks, under the supervision of staff sponsors.  The assembly featured a Latino dance group, musical performances including the OHS Meistersingers, and informational presentations about a variety of cultures and lifestyles represented at OHS. “I am very proud of the students who have joined our Diversity Committee, helped produce this program, and shared their culture and stories with their peers,” said Cory Johnson, OHS principal. “Our diversity is an asset and we are one Bulldog Nation. This assembly was intended to demonstrate respect and equity for all members of our community.  The students who presented their stories did so in the hopes of strengthening our community and bringing unity; even when we disagree we can still respect each other”

“Students who performed shared about how grateful they were to share their culture or lifestyle and that they now feel more connected to their peers overall,” shared Barb Hanson, Gear Up Coach and sponsor for the Diversity Assembly.  “We truly want to make sure that we are inclusive and welcoming of all students.”
