Drama Students to Perform at Civic Center

The Ottumwa High School theatre department will participate in the 2018 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase, presented by EMC Insurance Companies, in honor of the school's achievements for its October production of The Addams Family. 

Produced by Des Moines Performing Arts as the culmination of a year-long education initiative, the Showcase will be held at the Des Moines Civic Center on Monday, June 4 at 7 p.m. and will recognize 68 schools from across the entire state.

Select students will represent Ottumwa by performing in a collaborative inter-school medley led by guest Broadway music director, Adam Jones, and choreographer, Sara Brians.

Ottumwa High School will also be recognized with the following awards and honors:
•    Outstanding Overall Technical and Creative Achievement
•    Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role—Collin Kepner as “Uncle Fester”
•    Special Recognition for Performance in a Principal Role—Jennifer Culver as “Wednesday Addams”
•    Special Recognition for Performance in a Principal Role—David Halvorsen as 
Gomez Addams”

Tickets to the Showcase, which start at $15, will go on sale on Wednesday, May 16 at 9 a.m. at DMPA.org, the Civic Center ticket office, or by phone at 515-246-2300.

For the first time, the Showcase will be live-streamed at Iptv.org as part of an exciting collaboration with Iowa Public Television. IPTV will air highlights of the evening later this summer.

This is the first time OHS has received this high of recognition, according to Natalie Dommer, speech and drama instructor. “I will be at the Civic Center on June 4 to see our kids perform and accept our awards,” said Dommer. “This is a wonderful honor for our kids.”
