One of the seven majestic oaks standing guard in front of Douma Elementary was struck by lightning last week during a thunderstorm. The result was vertical striping around the perimeter of the tree. Maintenance director, Chuck Bray, had a local tree service evaluate the damage and treat the tree. The hope is the tree will survive the damage. The oak was planted the year the building was built in 1974. " We would hate to lose a 40-year-old tree," said Bray.
