Eight second grade classrooms at Liberty Elementary shared some holiday cheer with residents at Ottumwa’s Good Samaritan and Vista Woods today. Students spent the past few weeks practicing their carols and creating cards in preparation for today’s event.
Approximately 175 students boarded buses and spent 30 minutes singing. Most songs were familiar to the audience, including “Up on the Housetop,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Frosty the Snowman.” The renditions were made more entertaining with hand motions and special emphasis placed on certain words. Students swayed to their own music as they performed.
Mrs. Rupe and Mrs. VanDeKieft’s groups also recognized a special member of their audience who recently turned 100. The students ended their song list with “Happy Birthday.”
Students felt this project was important to the residents. “They like to read cards and don’t see many kids,” said Noah Fogle.
Another commented, “Everyone knows we make older people laugh.”
