Evans Middle School will host their annual Veterans Day program on Friday, November 11. The school encourages all area veterans to be an honored guest at this event.
The Evans Student Council will begin the day with coffee and donuts for veterans, beginning at 8:15 a.m.
The Veterans Day Assembly will begin at 9 a.m. in the school’s gym. Student Council president, Maxwell Thomason, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The Evans band and choir will perform and OHS Principal, Mark Hanson, will sing “God Bless America.”
The key note speaker for the event is Specialist, E-4 Curtis Lundgren, an instructor at Evans Middle School. Lundgren enlisted in the army in 2004 after attending Wittenberg College in Ohio and receiving a degree in English. He did his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington and was a member of the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Division. Lundgren was deployed for 15 months in Iraq. During his deployment, he took part in the surge of Baghdad. During the surge, Lundgren showed great courage in helping save a fellow comrade who had been shot. For this act of heroism, Lundgren was awarded the Silver Star, the third highest decoration for valor.
A flag raising ceremony will follow the assembly.
