Evans Middle School hosted their annual food drive in early December. Donations were picked up by The Lord’s Cupboard volunteers this week.
The drive resulted in a donation of two truck-loads of non-perishable food items. According to Vernon Trucano, board president of The Lord’s Cupboard, the donation is the equivalent of approximately 32 shopping carts of food. If each shopping cart has a value of approximately $200, the Evans donation is valued at $6,400 worth of groceries.
“This is a big help to the Lord’s Cupboard,” said Trucano. “At this time of the year there are a lot of needy people.” Each year the cupboard provides food to over 8,000 people. “We lose $3,000 every month we are open,” he said. “It helps our cash flow tremendously when we get a donation like this.”
Classes collecting the most donations included: Mrs. Burton and Miss Van Velsor, sixth grade; and Mrs. Heisdorffer and Ms. Jarmin, seventh/eighth grade. The sixth grade came in first for total points.
