Archery Clubs to Start in November

Archery clubs at elementary, middle school and high school will start practice in November.

Several volunteers are organizing the effort to start an archery program in Ottumwa. The district received equipment last year through a Department of Natural Resources grant. The grant stipulates that the equipment be used in physical education classes and for competition. All elementary and middle school PE teachers received instruction on how to instruct the Archery in the Schools program.

Elementary teachers are sharing equipment and teaching the unit to fourth and fifth graders. The elementary club will meet at a different school each month, based on where the equipment is located for PE. The club will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from November through February.  Each student will be responsible for their own transportation to and from practice and to meets.  Participation is open to students that will show respect to each elementary school, each other, and to coaches.  Because of safety, practices will be closed to siblings and spectators. Registration forms are going home soon. Contact building secretaries for more information.

The high school practice schedule will follow the elementary school schedule, sharing equipment and building location. See the attached schedule for information.

Middle school students will practice at Evans in the balcony.

The program is also receiving support from Whitetail Outdoors in Agency, who is assisting with bow maintenance.

Parents with questions about the elementary program may contact Bonnie Cobler at Horace Mann School 684-4661. Parents with middle or high school questions should contact Deb Schlechter at 684-6597 ext. 121.

Registration forms will be going home soon in both English and Spanish.  There is a registration fee which includes a t-shirt.
