Strength & Conditioning Covid19 Guidelines

These requirements must be followed when conducting voluntary strength and conditioning sessions as stated by the IHSAA & IGHSAU:  

  • Maintain social distance by being 6 feet apart.  
  • Masks will be worn when there are more than 10 people in the weight room.  
  • Strength coaches will keep a daily record of each athlete’s participation, temperature, and symptoms.
  • Athletes should will not participate if symptoms are present (fevers, chills, cough, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of taste or smell) or if temperature is >100.3
  • When free weight exercises require a spotter, a spotter should be positioned at each end of the bar and both should wear masks. 
  • All athletes must bring their own water bottle to drink from.  They may use the water fountain to fill up their water bottles, but they are not allowed to drink directly from the water fountains.

When entering the Ottumwa High School (if your workout begins at Schafer stadium please see next section):

  • Athletes should get to high school 10-15 minutes before their session begins to allow enough time to record temperatures.
  • Athletes will go to the wooden gym upon entering the high school and maintain social distancing of 6 feet apart.
  • A coach will then record your temperature and enter it into the daily log.
  • If there are more than 20 athletes during the session, groups will be split between the weight room and gym.  Groups will switch locations halfway through the workout to make sure and complete all assigned exercises.
  • All athletes should plan on wearing masks while in the weight room.

When entering Schafer stadium:

  • Athletes should get to Schafer stadium 10-15 minutes before their session begins to allow enough time to record temperatures.
  • Athletes will stand or sit on the track or field and maintain social distancing of 6 feet apart and staying away from athletes who are currently working out.
  • A coach will then record your temperature and enter it into the daily log.
  • Masks will not be required while attending workouts at Schafer stadium.

When entering Evans Middle School:

  • All athletes should get to the middle school 10-15 minutes before their session begins to allow enough time to record temperatures.
  • Athletes will stand or sit in the bleachers of the gym and maintain social distancing of 6 feet apart.
  • A coach will then record your temperature and enter it into the daily log
  • All athletes should plan on wearing masks while in the weight room.
