For the first time in the 15 year history of the Ottumwa Community School District’s Bulldog Book Bowl, James Elementary took home the traveling trophy.
The Brainiac Girls were the winners in the 2016 bowl. Eight Ottumwa teams competed in the event. Team members included: Hailey Brown, Kaitlyn Clawson, Ashley Gomez, Natasia Johnson, Raylynn Kendrick and Amy Vasquez. The team was coached by Julie Schuck, Allison Adams, Sheila Guiter, and Doris Whitten.
District media specialists created this quiz-type competition for fifth grade students in 2001 to promote reading. Schools select teams of up to six students to represent their school. Students read and study nine books with a school sponsor. During competition, students use the titles of each book to answer questions. This year, the competition was changed slightly. Each team competed twice against randomly-drawn opponents. Scores from the two rounds are tallied and the two highest scoring teams competed in the final round.
This year’s second place winners were the Book Ninjas from Eisenhower Elementary. Team members included: Colton Addis, Xavian Arnold, Olivia Coram, Hailey Garrison, Jake Mellin, and Stephanie Pierce. The team was coached by Jaime Williams and Jennifer Van Nest.
Seven students received the Master Quizzer distinction, with two students earning the distinction twice. A competitor becomes a master quizzer by answering four questions correctly during a quiz round. Master quizzers included: Hailey Brown (twice), Raylynn Kendrick, and Amy Vasquez, James; Hailey Garrison and Jake Mellin, Eisenhower; Ruth Fajardo-Zelaya (twice) and Sara McElroy, Liberty.
