Attention all inventors! The local Invention Convention will be held Tuesday, January 30 at Liberty Elementary from 5:30-8 p.m. If needed, the snow date for this event will be Thursday, February 1. All Ottumwa Community School District students in grades K-8 are invited to participate. Those participating must create a simple, working invention and tri-fold poster, along with students in grades 3-8 will be required to create an inventor’s log documenting their work.
Students and families can enter Liberty Elementary starting at 5:30 p.m. to set up for the event. Scheduled judging interviews will take place from 6–7 p.m., with the public invited to view the inventions from 7-7:30 p.m. An awards presentation will follow with the winning inventors being presented with medals, sponsored by John Deere Ottumwa Works.
To sign up for this event, please contact your school secretary. There will be a rules sheet in both English and Spanish, an entry form, and a tips sheet available in the school office starting December 11. Entry forms are due back to the office to secure a spot in the event by 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23.
NEW THIS YEAR: Any child in grades K-5 who signs up for the event AND attends that evening with all of the necessary requirements (for grades K-2: a poster and invention; for grades 3-8: a poster, inventor's log, and invention) will have their name put in to win a FREE scholarship to a summer STEM camp in partnership with the Ottumwa Schools and Camp Invention ($225 value). Camp Invention will be held at Evans Middle School from July 9th-13th, 2018 (9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. each day). More information about Camp Invention can be found at: http://campinvention.org/.
