The Ottumwa Board of Education met in a special session on Saturday, June 24 to vote on a change order for the stadium bleachers.
During excavation of the home side bleachers, a stone foundation with mortar capped with six to 12 inches of concrete was discovered. The stone walls were 16 inches wide and over six feet deep. There was approximately eight inches of dirt between the stone columns. The footings for the new bleacher system require footings that are approximately three feet down and spaced every 18 feet.
Two alternates were presented to the board. The board approved Alternate #2, which will involve placing one footing all the way down the front of the home bleachers that is approximately four feet wide. This will save some excavation costs. The footings for the top of the structure will remain as previously designed.
The special meeting was called to keep the project moving due to the installation of the field turf beginning soon.
