Passing of OHS Student Abdul Alvarado

Posted Date: 5/06/25 (3:00 PM)

Dear Ottumwa Schools Staff, Families, and Community Members,

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that the Ottumwa Community School District shares the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our students, Abdul Alvarado, a senior at Ottumwa High School. Abdul passed away at home on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Abdul was a bright, thoughtful, and kind young man. Just the evening before his passing, he joyfully attended his senior prom at OHS—a memory his classmates and friends will now carry with them forever. He was a proud member of the Class of 2025.

Superintendent McGrory stated, “We are deeply saddened by Abdul’s passing. The loss of a student affects our entire community, and our hearts go out to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We will do everything we can to support our students and staff through this difficult time.”

"Abdul had an inquisitive spirit and a passion for history. His smile and polite nature will be deeply missed." Principal Bramschreiber noted.

To help navigate this loss, Ottumwa High School and the district have activated support services for students, staff, and families. If you or someone you know needs support, don't hesitate to get in contact with the Ottumwa High School counseling office at 641-683-4444, visit the Brain Health Room at OHS, or email megan.logan@ottumwaschools.com. Support is also available 24/7 through Your Life Iowa by phone, text, or online chat.

Please keep Abdul’s family in your thoughts and prayers as they face this tremendous loss. As a district, we will continue to lean on each other and ensure that Abdul’s memory lives on through the kindness and care we show one another.

Sincerely,
Michael McGrory, Superintendent
Shelley Bramschreiber, Ottumwa High School Principal
