Amanda LeGrande Named 2025 IAAE Teacher of the Year

The Ottumwa Community School District is thrilled to announce that Amanda LeGrande has been named the 2025 Teacher of the Year by the Iowa Association of Alternative Education (IAAE). This honor recognizes Amanda’s unwavering commitment, exceptional professionalism, and deep dedication to alternative education at Gateway High School.

Three Decades of Service
Over 32 years, Amanda has devoted herself to the mission of alternative education, adapting to changing student needs, district priorities, and evolving social-emotional challenges. Her long-term commitment is a testament to her passion for equitable learning opportunities and her belief that every student deserves respect, support, and a path to success.

Extraordinary Care Beyond the Classroom
Amanda consistently goes above and beyond her normal duties: building meaningful relationships with students, offering individualized support, mentoring colleagues, volunteering for additional tasks, and often serving as a cornerstone of the Gateway community. Her willingness to engage with students outside scheduled classes by listening, guiding, advocating, and has helped countless learners navigate struggle and build resilience.

Advocate for Access and Second Chances
In the spirit of IAAE’s mission (“public alternative education serves to ensure that every young person may find a path to the educational goals of the community”), Amanda embodies the principle that education should be a bridge, not a gate. She consistently creates inclusive, flexible, high-support environments for students whose paths may not fit traditional molds, proving that with care and structure, every student can belong, learn, and succeed.

Mentorship and Professional Leadership
Beyond working with students, Amanda contributes to Gateway’s teaching culture. She models patience, compassion, and educational professionalism, sets an example for newer staff, and supports schoolwide initiatives that promote staff collaboration, student well-being, and community building. Her presence strengthens the bonds among staff and between staff and students.

A Legacy of Impact
Over more than three decades, Amanda’s influence has reached far beyond individual classrooms. Her work has touched students, families, colleagues, and community partners, shaping Gateway’s identity as a place of opportunity, understanding, and second chances. Her contributions have made Gateway a safer, more supportive, more hopeful place for generations of students.
The Significance of This Honor
IAAE, as the state’s association for alternative education, supports programs devoted to serving students who benefit from nontraditional educational approaches. Being selected as IAAE Teacher of the Year is not simply a recognition of longevity or seniority, it is a clear statement that Amanda’s work aligns deeply with IAAE’s guiding principles: commitment to equity, individualized support, respect for each learner’s journey, and dedication to ensuring that “every young person may find a path to the educational goals of the community.”

For Gateway High School, this award shines a spotlight on the power and importance of alternative education and validates our daily work: giving students, whatever their background or circumstances, a second chance, a stable support system, and a clear path forward.
