Open Enrollment Deadlines & Athletic Eligibility Loss

In accordance with Iowa Administrative Code 281—17.2(3)(e), the Ottumwa Community School District provides the following annual notice to parents and guardians regarding open enrollment.

Possible Loss of Athletic Eligibility

Parents and guardians considering open enrollment should be aware that transferring a student from one school district to another may affect the student’s eligibility to participate in varsity interscholastic athletics.

Unless an exception applies, a student who transfers between schools that are members or associate members of the Iowa High School Athletic Association or Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union is ineligible to compete in varsity athletics for 140 calendar days following enrollment in the receiving school.

Because exceptions may apply based on a student’s individual circumstances, families are encouraged to contact the district’s Activities Office, the Iowa High School Athletic Association, or the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union before completing an open enrollment transfer.
