State of Iowa Civics Assessment
State of Iowa Civics Assessment
As of July 1st, 2026, all students must successfully complete the Civics Test, per code SF369, to earn a high school diploma. This assessment is required by Iowa law for graduation from every public high school in the state.
Here are a few important things to know:
- Students must earn 60% or higher to meet the graduation requirement.
- The assessment is not timed, allowing students to work carefully through each question.
- Students who do not pass on their first attempt may retake the assessment as many times as needed.
- Ottumwa and Gateway High Schools will provide multiple testing opportunities throughout the school year to ensure every student has the opportunity to meet this graduation requirement.
- Students will also receive study resources and review opportunities before testing.
Our goal is for every student to successfully complete this requirement well before graduation.
Thank you for helping ensure every student has the opportunity to meet this important graduation requirement.
The State of Iowa Civics Assessment is a graduation requirement for all Iowa public high school students.
To help students prepare, we have provided a digital study guide. Printed copies are also available at school for any student who would like one.
Students are encouraged to review the guide before their scheduled assessment.
Remember:
- Passing score: 60%
- Assessment is not timed
- Students may retake the assessment if necessary
- Multiple testing opportunities will be available throughout the school year
If you have questions about your student's testing schedule or graduation requirements, please contact your school counselor or building administrator.
