Corporal Punishment, Restraint, and Physical Confinement

Corporal Punishment, Restraint, and Physical Confinement

State law prohibits school employees from using corporal punishment. In certain circumstances, school employees may use reasonable and necessary force that is not intended to cause pain to protect people or property or address other situations allowed by law.

State law also places limits on when and how school employees may restrain, confine, or detain a student. These actions are permitted only in specific circumstances and are subject to requirements regarding how, where, and how long they may be used. Schools must document these incidents and provide required notice to parents or guardians per Chapter 103 of Iowa Administrative Code
